HKBU announces six shortlisted novels for the 3rd The Dream of The Red Chamber Award: The World
The Hong Kong Baptist University announces the shortlisted novels for 3rd The Dream of the Red Chamber Award: The World's Distinguished Novel in Chinese. After selection by a preliminary judging panel comprising 15 members including literary critics, Chief Editors of literary magazines and writers, the following six novels have been shortlisted for the final round in the Dream of the Red Chamber Award, an award that carries the highest cash prize (HK$300,000) among its peers.
The six shortlisted novels will also have the chance to receive the Highly Recommended Award of the Dream of Red Chamber Award. The final judging panel comprises Professor David Wang Der-wei (Contemporary Chinese literature specialist, Edward C. Henderson Professor of Chinese Literature, Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University); Professor Chen Sihe (Contemporary Chinese literature specialist, Associate Dean of College of Humanities, and Head of Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Fudan University); Prof. Chou Ying-hsiung (Novel critic, Former Dean of College of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Chiao Tung University, and Former Vice President of National Chung Cheng University); Prof. Chen I-chih (Contemporary Chinese literature specialist, Assistant Professor of Department of Chinese, National Taiwan Normal University, and Editor-in-chief of the literary supplement, United Daily News); Professor Huang Ziping (Contemporary Chinese literature specialist, Professor of Department of Chinese at HKBU); and Mr. Mo Yan (novelist, winner of “The 2nd Dream of the Red Chamber Award” for his novel Life, Death, Exhaustion). The results will be announced in mid-July.
The Dream of the Red Chamber Award runs every two years and aims to encourage the publication of excellent Chinese novels worldwide, and to recognise outstanding Chinese novel writers from around the world to enhance the standards of Chinese novel-writing. Entries for the 3rd Dream of the Red Chamber Award should be original novels of over 80,000 Chinese words published between 1st January 2008 and 31st December 2009. Because of the sheer number of Chinese novels published each year, for effective judging the Planning Committee has invited designated publishers to nominate entries since the 1st Award.
